As I mentioned in this post, we traveled through Provence visiting the towns based on market days. When I was doing the research for our itinerary one town that always came up for market was Apt. In all of the blogs that listed information on Apt’s market, they all said arrive early to find a parking spot. The breakfast at our BNB was always too good to be missed so we arrived later than planned and had to park farther out. Not the end of the world though as Apt is a very large town.
Apt felt more like a city to me. There are gas stations, grocery stores and more modern buildings. While the town itself is pretty, it wasn’t the most impressive that we visited. The market, however, was! It went on for miles and miles! You would think you had come to the end and then you would turn a corner to find that there was even more to see.
We spent the morning in Apt walking around the market. We bought more on this day than any other. I knew before the trip that I wanted to look at French linens. We found so many amazing vendors selling things from table cloths to hand woven blankets. I couldn’t resist bringing a few home.
After a couple of hours in the busy streets of Apt we decided to explore a sleepier town nearby – Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt. It’s only about fifteen minutes from Apt and makes a nice place to visit for lunch after a crowded morning at the market. The views from these little Provençal towns never ceased to amaze me. We were ready for lunch so we stumbled upon Le Saint Hubert that had the most amazing terrace where we could have lunch. This ended up being one of my favorite meals from the trip! I always love when things work out like that.
It didn’t take long to explore Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt as it is pretty small. So we hopped back into the car and drove to Roussillon. Roussillon is considered one of the most impressive villages in France. It is surrounded by ochre quarries so all of the buildings have beautiful red and pink hues.
The scenery around is also stunning. The lush green trees next to the red clay cliffs make this village one of the most unique that we visited. You definitely need to walk up to the lookout because the view from up there is worth the climb.
By the middle of the afternoon we could see some dark clouds rolling in so we decided to head back to our BNB. We made it back before the storm blew in. So we cozied up in our room and just listened to the rain outside. Xo Bryn
That’s so genius to get linens there! I need to note that whenever I plan a trip there. Seriously loved your trip to France!
